Information about the procedure and method

Disulfiram is a well-known medication used in the treatment of alcohol dependence. While it does not eliminate addiction itself, it plays an important role in supporting long-term abstinence. Its action is based on blocking the breakdown of alcohol in the liver, which leads to a build-up of toxic substances in the body.

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid heartbeat (tachycardia)
  • Dizziness and sudden facial flushing
  • Drop in blood pressure and extreme weakness

In cases of heavier drinking, the reaction may be life-threatening, leading to heart rhythm problems or circulatory collapse. Because of these effects, the fear of drinking acts as a strong deterrent, making Disulfiram one of the most effective forms of aversion therapy.

How does Disulfiram implantation work?

Duration: About 15-20 minutes

Anesthesia: Local (Lidocaine)

Implantation site: Under the gluteal muscle

Effectiveness duration: 10-12 months

Procedure steps:

  1. Medical consultation and qualification for the treatment

  2. Preventive antibiotic given as a single dose

  3. A small skin incision (around 1.5 cm)

  4. Placement of Disulfiram tablets under the gluteal muscle

  5. Wound closure with dissolvable sutures

After the procedure, patients can return to their normal daily activities right away

Is Disulfiram an effective treatment?

Disulfiram is a valuable aid in alcohol addiction therapy, but its success largely depends on the patient’s determination and motivation. The best outcomes come when the implant is combined with psychotherapy, which is why we always recommend additional therapeutic support alongside the medication.
